Impasse adds weight for the need for an independent regulator

RESPONDING to the news of an impasse between the Premier League and the EFL on football's finances, Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game, said:

"The continuing impasse between the Premier League and the EFL over parachute payments and the financial flow in football has only one realistic solution: An independent regulator.

"We need to move towards a game that honours the pyramid, rewards well-run clubs and respects the fans.

"Our Sustainability Index does exactly that. Football's wealth should be distributed to clubs based on four criteria: financial sustainability, good governance, equality standards and fan engagement.

"It should not be a deal done between billionaires in smoke-filled rooms, but instead done with helping well-run community clubs and the fans in mind."
