Derby decision shows need for independent regulator

‘Derby have been playing Russian roulette with their heritage of their club’

Niall Couper, Director of Fair Game

RESPONDING to the EFL’s £100,000 fine for Derby County, Niall Couper, Director of Fair Game, said: “Today’s verdict is yet another clear indication of why football needs an independent regulator.
“Derby County should never have been allowed to get into this situation. We need real-time financial scrutiny, proper transparency and rules that allow intervention when a club is going off the rails.
“Derby have been playing Russian Roulette with the heritage and tradition of their club.
“Meanwhile, a club like Wycombe Wanderers, who are largely well run and are trying to live within their means, are left in limbo.
“We need a system that encourages sustainability. Move the parachute payments into a new central pot and use that money to reward clubs that are run well.”
