New survey reveals horrific level of sexism in our national game
HERGAMETOO, a key partner of Fair Game, today revealed shocking statistics about the level of sexist abuse in our national game.
The organisation conducted a survey of 371 women online and found:
91.9% have seen sexist online abuse towards a woman in football;
63.1% have experienced sexist online abuse themselves because of football;
58.4% have experienced abuse in real life at a football ground or in a pub while watching football.
Niall Couper, director of Fair Game, an organisation of 20 'value-driven' clubs striving to change football for the better, said:
"These latest statistics are horrific. Sexism has no place in our national game. It needs to be addressed immediately and that's why we care calling for new robust Equality Standards.
"The Standards are good in principle, but we need to move away from the failed tick box culture. It needs to be about outcomes. The game needs to wake up and smell the coffee. We need realistic long-term solutions that condemn sexism in football to history."
