Fair Game urges Government to set firm timeline to deliver independent regulator

Every time reform of football has been mooted, the proposals have ended up gathering dust. We need a firm timeline for legislation. And we need it now. This is a once-in-a-generation chance to change football and protect our community clubs

FAIR GAME demanded the Government move quickly to set a new timeline to introduce an independent regulator, following their official response to the Fan-Led Review earlier today.

Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game, said:Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game said: “Football is in crisis – but today could be the start of the come-back. The argument for an independent regulator is over. Fans, Fair Game clubs, politicians from all parties and the Government all back it.

"The question is when. Every time reform of football has been mooted, the proposals have ended up gathering dust. We need a firm timeline for legislation. And we need it now.

“This is a once-in-a-generation chance to change football and protect our community clubs. That is why need to make sure we address football’s unsustainable financial model.

“The Fan Led Review called on authorities to address financial flow by the end of the year – but they haven’t progressed with any meaningful dialogue.

“We believe the regulator should have the Sustainability Index in its powers – a system which grades clubs according to financial sustainability, good governance, equality standards and fan and community engagement. The higher they score the more money they get. Incentivisation has been shown to work in other industries. The Sustainability Index would be transformational for football.”
